The Art of Mending

When a fly fisher is faced with areas of the stream where there are conflicting currents or obstructions, getting a drag free float can be difficult. This can occur both when nymphing and when dry fly fishing. Mending your line enables you to get a drag free float and lets your fly drift naturally. Mending is something that every stream fly fisher should learn, practice and employ. To mend his line the angler lifts his rod tip up and flips a U shaped curl in the line, the line should be all that moves, not your leader and fly. Simply put if the current in front of you, or that your casting across, is faster than where you are then you mend upstream, if it is slower then you mend downstream.

What you are trying to accomplish is to have the current pull the slack out of the fly line and not drag your fly, extending the length of your drag free float. Reach mends are when you simply reach your rod tip upstream or down after making your cast while the line is still in the air. You can also wiggle the tip of your rod while the line is in the air, this makes the line land in a bunch of s shapes, which will pull out first, allowing your fly an extended drag free float. Learning to mend, and mend well, will do more for your success as a fly fisher than almost anything else, being able to double haul and cast a hundred feet may look impressive, but good mending will help you catch more fish.
